When a sitemap needs splitting

A single sitemap can contain at most 50,000 URLs and must stay below 50 MB uncompressed. This tool checks both limits while it builds each part, then creates an index that points to their public locations. It does not claim that smaller files improve rankings; splitting is required only when a file crosses a protocol limit or when separate sections make monitoring easier.

Standard loc, lastmod, changefreq, and priority fields are retained. Image, video, news, and other extension elements are not copied, so use a format-specific splitter when those elements matter.

The splitter accepts a URL sitemap, not a sitemap index. Use the sitemap crawler to map an existing index, or the sitemap checker to validate each live file after uploading it.

How to split sitemap.xml

  1. Enter the public directory where you will upload the generated files.
  2. Choose a maximum of 50,000 URLs per file, then upload or paste the original URL sitemap XML.
  3. Download every part and sitemap-index.xml, upload them together, and validate the live index.
